A spokesman from River Clyde Homes said the location of the building made it cheaper and more convenient to demolish the 17-storey building at 2.30am on Saturday.
It took approximately four seconds before the building went up in smoke.
The company said the explosion had to take place at night when trains weren't running on the nearby Wemyss Bay railway line.

The building contained 102 flats and is being replaced with terraced housing which will house up to 56 people
